by AK - Jeff inhttp://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/2007-05-06-opledereligion_n.htm?csp=34.
i agree with most of the 'benefits' he describes from the religion - particularly the civil liberties they have gained in the us.
story is one-sided, but ok.. by joel p. engardioplease excuse me if i ever disrupted your laundry, yard work or nap by knocking on your door.

I thought it was kind of funny that this article about all the court cases that they won came out just as we were hearing about the one that they didn't win!

I thought it was kind of good-ish. I loved the song at the beginning. It was typical Aqua Teen. Didn't expect much more.

Name Things Witnesses Make Big Deals Over
by minimus inhave you ever seen a witness get absolutely giddy over placing a measly tract with a neighbor and get up on the platform and tell the "experience" of how the neighbor actually said that he'd read it!
big deal!!!.

What % of JW's think they will make it to the New System without dying?
by JH inwhen i joined some 20 years ago, i was 99% sure i'd make it alive and see the new system without dying, because they way they put it, the end was so close, and i was so young.. today, if i was still going to meetings, i would say that i would be 20% sure of seeing the new sytem without dying first.. if you were still a jw, or if you still are going to meetings, what % would you say is your odds of making it to the new system without dying?.

I think most witnesses think the end will come within the next 20 years, no matter what year it is today. I used to hear alot more about people buying thier "Armegeddon car" but not so much anymore. All those cars have rusted away and been replaced. Nobody thought they would graduate in this system, or have kids, certainly their kids would never graduate, or get married or have kids. More and more they are having to accept that there is a future and today matters. Its a harsh reality that they do not want to face. Maybe 20% think they will make it, maybe that's a bit high.

I watched the first part of the Frontline special on Mormons last night and I just visited the website. Mormons are so much cooler than JWs. They have a bloody history, pride in their ancestory and their temples are beautiful! They have a college and they use the term "celestial" alot. There is so much imagination and creativity in their theology and their baptismal pools are really cool. I'm just saying if you're going to be one of those "weird" religions be weird, not like those dull JWs.

Home Schooling - Yes or No?
by winnie inwhat are your opinions?.
it seems that alot of jw's are into this.. i think there is a time and place for this, ie if you don't have access to a public/private school.. it doesn't seem regulated to me.
my mother home schooled my sister because she couldn't be bothered taking and picking her up from school.

Home schooling is a great way to help your six-year-old to get 50 hours of filed service per month. The average JW child is much smarter than most public school teachers, anyway. You know, all those My Book of Bible Stories that they memorized by the time they were 3. That counts as reading. And the knowledge about Jehovah - that's more important than anything - and they don't teach that in public schools. Plus what's the point of your kids to making friends at school, they all will just die at Armegeddon. Homeschooling - I'm for it!

I can echo the statements of the other posters on this thread and can really relate to their feelings and experiences as a child. I do have positive things to say. Being a JW kid, an outsider, always left out taught me empathy for the other weird kids, who smelled funny or came from bad homes or were poor and dressed funny. I knew how it felt to be ignored - awful - so I reached out to those kids and tried to be thier friend, tried to spare them some pain of lonliness. Being the only kid who didn't get a birthday cupcake and valentines day cards hurt and I became known as the weird kid. Being the weird kid gave me freedom though. I could do anything that I wanted. I didn't have to worry that people would think that I was weird because they already did. Looking back, I think I developed some kind of resistance to JW mind control. (If anyone ever saw the Simpsons episode when they join a cult and Homer doesn't get it - that was me.) I was kind of oblivious to it until I got out of school and mostly associated with JW.

Ok. Just take a deep breath and slow down for a minute. You said you just met her this weekend at the ciruit assembly then you start talking about marriage! There's a lot of room inbetween. You posted that you are a pioneer. Does she know this? Could this cause her to think that she needs to get baptized if she wants to date someone with responsibility in the congregation? Let her know that you're cool with her not being baptized and that she should take her time in making such an important decision, no matter how long it takes. Get her to open up about her feelings toward the org. Listen and don't talk. ( you win two ways, you get to test the waters and she'll think you're great "he's such a great listener!!")

Percentage of JW's that are undercover?
by flipper inwhat do you think?
it seems like a lot are there so they won't lose family and friends - are in good standing but don't actually believe.

Ok, I'll pull a statistic out of my @ss too.
75% of JWs under 40 have no clue what they believe, all they know is the JW lifestyle and Rev. 21:3&4.
